The Ideal Schedule for Pediatric Eye Exams: When To Come Get Your Child’s Vision Checked

Clear vision plays a vital role in a child’s development. However, children don’t always recognize or communicate vision problems. That’s why proactive pediatric eye care is so important. At Synoptic Eye Care, we recommend a regular schedule for eye exams to ensure your child’s vision remains healthy as they grow.

First Eye Exam

Your child’s first comprehensive eye exam should occur at approximately 6 to 12 months old. During this visit, we assess eye alignment, clarity of vision, and overall eye health. Even at this early age, signs of eye issues such as strabismus (crossed eyes) or significant refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism) can be detected and addressed early.

Second Eye Exam

The next major milestone is around age 3. By this point, your child’s vision has developed enough for us to conduct more detailed tests. This exam evaluates visual acuity, eye teaming, depth perception, and tracking - key components for learning and daily activities.

Before Starting School

An eye exam before kindergarten or first grade is essential - around Age 5 or 6. Visual demands increase dramatically as children begin to read, write, and spend more time in structured classrooms. Undetected vision issues can lead to academic struggles, attention difficulties, or behavioral concerns.

Annually Thereafter

Once your child is in school, annual eye exams will help maintain optimal vision and ensure any new issues are addressed promptly. This is especially important if your child wears glasses or contact lenses or has a history of eye problems.

Signs Your Child Might Need an Eye Exam Sooner

Even with a routine schedule, there are times when an extra visit is necessary. Keep an eye out for these warning signs:

  • Squinting or sitting too close to screens

  • Frequent eye rubbing

  • Complaints of headaches or eye strain

  • Difficulty reading or concentrating

  • Holding books very close

  • Unusual clumsiness or bumping into things

If you notice any of these, don’t wait for the next scheduled exam - reach out to us for an evaluation.
